I came to Warren Barr North Shore because of lumbar spinal stenosis that had severely impacted my mobility. When I arrived, I was in a wheelchair and needed significant assistance just to move from place to place.
At that point, my goal wasn’t complicated—I simply wanted to get stronger and regain my independence.
The therapy team immediately got to work. They gave me exercises to build strength in my legs and worked with me every day. At first, standing was difficult. Then I began making progress. Little by little, my legs became stronger, and I started doing things I couldn’t do before.
One of the biggest milestones in my recovery was learning how to transfer safely. I went from needing a Hoyer lift to being able to move from my bed to a wheelchair with much less assistance. From there, my therapist helped me progress to standing with a walker and eventually taking steps on my own.
I’ll never forget the day I stood up from my wheelchair, grabbed my walker, and took six steps.
To someone else, six steps might not seem like much. To me, it was everything.
Those six steps represented weeks of hard work, determination, and encouragement from people who believed I could do more than I thought possible. They showed me that I was moving forward.
The therapy staff played a huge role in that progress. They worked with me consistently, challenged me when I needed it, and gave me the confidence to keep pushing. Even after returning home, I continue practicing the exercises and routines they taught me because I know they are helping me get stronger every day.
The nursing team and CNAs were also excellent. They answered my questions, helped me understand my medications, and made sure I felt comfortable throughout my stay. Everyone treated me with respect and genuinely seemed to care about my recovery.
If someone asked me why I would recommend Warren Barr North Shore, my answer would be simple: the people care. They don’t walk away when things are difficult. They stay with you, encourage you, and help you keep moving forward.
I’m not finished with my recovery journey yet, but Warren Barr North Shore helped me take some of the most important steps toward getting there.
